Kirk as captain. Among Starfleet captains, Kirk certainly had his own style. Were the long-term effects considered during the decision-making process, or were they off-the-cuff style decisions? How was the crew affected by the choices of one person in relation to the Prime Directive and other measures set in place by Starfleet? Would we make the same decisions as Kirk when faced with the same choices? In this episode of Standard Orbit, host Hayley Stoddart is joined by Mike Richards to discuss the leadership of Captain Kirk and how his decisions led to the results—whether positive or negative—that affected the crew of the Enterprise and others. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - The Audio Drama. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is a rather infamous film both in and out of Star Trek circles, but we here at Standard Orbit happen to love it. In celebration of our 300th episode, hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart decided to do something special: an audio drama of The Final Frontier based on an earlier draft of the film's script (featuring the rock monster) and with the dream casting of the film, Sean Connery as Sybok. With the recent release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, JJ Abrams has now directed two Star Trek and two Star Wars films. As much as we hated to lose Bruce Greenwood's Pike, was his death a necessary lynchpin for the rest of Star Trek Into Darkness? All this and more on this week's Standard Orbit, boldly listen! Which of these highly specialized jobs make sense to have on a starship, which ones don't, and what other types of officers would we have liked to have seen on the Enterprise? Do technicians really do all the work? Counselors weren't standard crew members until the 24th century, but there were psychiatrists on board in the 23rd and just as important. Standard Orbit 247: The Scooby-Doo Ending The Nicholas Meyer Director's Cuts. As Leonardo da Vinci once said, "Art is never finished, only abandoned." Nicholas Meyer would seem to agree, as he returned to both of the Star Trek films he directed (The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country) to create alternate director's cut. These re-edits aren't to the extreme that some others films have undergone (Blade Runner, Batman v. Superman, etc.), but make a significant impact on the narratives none the less. This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss the differences between these alternate versions and their original theatrical counterparts, which versions they find superior, and some of their non-Star Trek, favorite director's cuts. Standard Orbit 233: Another Speaker At A Star Trek Convention No Kirks and a New Spock. This week hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart talk no Kirks in Star Trek 4 and a new Spock in Discovery. What would the next Kelvin Timeline film look like without Chris Pine? Should Captain Kirk be recast again, or just written out entirely? Same goes for his on screen dad Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk, who was teased as appearing in Star Trek 4 all the way back in 2016. Speaking of recasting we have a new Spock coming to Discovery in the person of Ethan Peck, grandson of Hollywood legend Gregory Peck. How do we feel about a second "young Spock" existing concurrently with Zachary Quinto's? We also revisit the conversation about whether or not we'd have preferred to see Kelvin Timeline actors on Discovery, or for that matter any TOS characters at all. Chapters Welcome to Standard Orbit! Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan's importance in Star Trek history cannot be overstated, it revived the franchise from the brink of oblivion and paved the way for a feature film franchise that (with a brief interruption from 2002-2009) continues to this day. But did you know The Wrath of Khan also revolutionized the home video market? In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore are joined by master of all things Khan knowledge, John Tenuto to discuss how The Wrath of Khan became the best selling videocassette in history to that time and changed the way studios did business after a film exited theaters. Standard Orbit 212: Patching Up Continuity Uniform Patches, Starships Names, and Registry Numbers. Until Star Trek: The Motion Picture, each Starfleet vessel has its own unique insignia patch on its uniforms...or did it? In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore are joined by Larry "Dr. Trek" Nemecek to discuss this hotly debated topic among fandom and how these seemingly incongruous and contradictory uniform patches can be reconciled within greater Star Trek continuity. In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore talk the Klingons' ever-changing appearance from Kor to T’Kuvma, if the franchise may have gone too far in explaining out-of-universe production aesthetics in-universe, and how the Klingons are forever tied to the Romulans. Standard Orbit 209: The Lost Episodes, Part II More Never-Produced TOS Episodes. There are dozens of story ideas, outlines, and scripts submitted to or commissioned for TOS that never went into production. In this episode of Standard Orbit hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore share the synopses of and their thoughts on three more of these would-be episodes. From the minds of renown Star Trek writers David Gerrold, Norman Spinrad, Gene Coon and John Meredyth Lucas, these stories present us with a distracting creature that creates mayhem, a megalomaniacal Federation sociologist, and a xenophobic, hidden civilization. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Zach Moore is joined by Brandon-Shea Mutala to continue our series of commentaries on the Robert Bloch episode of TOS. This time we're covering the second season's Wolf in the Fold! One of the few Scotty-centric episodes of the series, it features some...interesting story points including one of fiction's favorite go-to villains, Jack The Ripper! Our conversation hits on this episode's awkward gender politics, the movies that scare us most, potential fifth season Enterprise plots, and if this might episode that Quentin Tarantino picks to remake as the new Star Trek 4.
