Standard Orbit 153: Earl Grey Generations

Two Podcasts One Destiny. Zach and Ken attempt to discuss Star Trek's Christmas movie: Generations when the Earl Grey crew of Lee, Amy, and Richard beam into Standard Orbit studios. This crossover podcast discusses the Star Trek crossover movie. Why did they have to kill Capt. Kirk, the Enterprise, and Captain Picard's family? Was a good villain and was the Nexus a good plot device? How did the Flagship of the Federation lose to an old Bird of Prey?

With two podcast crews representing their genres; we explore this controversial film with good humor and real passion. We hope you enjoy this approach and one we hope to employ in the future when TOS and TNG elements cross paths. Be sure to listen to the end as a hidden challenge is revealed and we find out if it was successful.

Excerpt (iTunes Subtitle)
TOS Action Figures and Toys. Fandom takes many forms, and when you're a kid that form is often toys. With it being the holiday season where many a gift will be given and received, we thought it would be a perfect time to take a look back at many of the TOS toys and action figures released over the years. Being a child of the late 80s, Zach spends extra attention on what truly marked he golden age of Star Trek toys...the Playmates line of the 1990s.

Which four characters were the precious few to have their own action figures released for Star Trek III? What's the story with the unique uniforms of the Star Trek: Generations action figures? And whatever happened to the bridge play-set that was promised in the Star Trek 2009 line? All this and much, much more as Zach educates Ken on the wonderful world of Star Trek toys in this episode of of Standard Orbit!

Excerpt (iTunes Subtitle)
From the earliest Star Trek episodes to the most recent motion pictures; Captain Kirk and the men and women of the Starship Enterprise have sprung into action to save the planet Earth. Whether the threat is direct or indirect or comes from revenge driven adversaries, big and small living machines, an overmedicated Chief Medical Officer and even our own short sightedness; The mighty crew of the USS Enterprise have kept the Earth safe for future generations.

Zach and Ken explore all the various threats to Earth the Enterprise crew have faced over the 50 year history of the original and rebooted cast. What were the most clever threats? What common themes have we seen multiple times? Join us on our journey from the earliest episodes through the newest movies in this exciting high energy episode of Standard Orbit.

Standard Orbit 150: Practically CGI

The Special Effects of the Star Trek Movies. Star Trek has always been more about substance than spectacle, but that's not to say the franchise hasn't given us its fair share of impressive visuals over the years, especially in the films. We're taking a look at the evolution of the special effects from The Motion Picture all the way up through the Kelvin Timeline films, discussing highlights, low-lights, and of course old school practical techniques vs. modern computer generated images.
Is there truly no comparison to The Motion Picture? Are The Final Frontier's special effects really that bad? What were they thinking reusing footage from climax of The Undiscovered Country in the following film? All this and a fun story about whales from the Chief in this episode of Standard Orbit!
