In this episode of Standard Orbit, Ken and Zach are joined by Melodic Trek's Brandon-Shea Mutala to dive deep into Star Trek's second pilot and and discuss what makes Where No Man Has Gone Before such a great launching point for the original series.

Where does this episode rank among the rest of TOS? Should it have been broadcast first instead of The Man Trap? What aesthetic changes were made to the series between Where No Man Has Gone Before and TOS proper, and were they for the better? All this and much more, plus our thoughts on Star Trek Remastered as well as Gary Lockwood and Sally Kellerman's panel at this year's Star Trek Las Vegas!

Star Trek Origins: Star Trek III.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, we start a new series of discussions focusing on the origins of key concepts and events that influenced the franchise for years to come. This week, Star Trek III: The Search For Spock!

While being one of the more divisive entries in the film franchise, Star Trek III was our introduction to a great many things that went on to form a rich foundation for Star Trek's future series and movies. The Bird-of-Prey, the Excelsior, the depth of Vulcan religion and mind melds, the idea of honor for the Klingons, Earth Space Dock and even Transwarp drive. We discuss them all, and also a couple of things that didn't stick from The Search For Spock.

137: Tonight on NBC...

The Man Trap Commentary.

50 years ago on this very day, Star Trek hit the airwaves for the very first time at 8:30pm EST on NBC. That episode was The Man Trap, and what better way to celebrate Star Trek's golden anniversary than by watching it along with us?

Although the sixth episode of the series produced, The Man Trap was chosen by NBC to be the first episode of Star Trek broadcast. This has spurred much debate over the years as to what would've been a more "proper" premiere and generated a lot of unfair criticism towards The Man Trap, which we actually found to be a great introduction to the series! So dim the lights, put some extra salt on your popcorn, and travel back to a simpler time when this hour of television was the entirety of the Star Trek franchise. We're still talking about it 50 years later, so it must have done something right!

S2: BEYOND Relieved

Reflections on Standard Orbit and BEYOND.

From the Commodore's Personal Log: On January 11, 2016, the REFIT of Standard Orbit took to the airwaves with a new sound, a new crew and a new mission starting with Episode 111: Hailing Frequencies Open. My first and ONLY choice for First Officer was my good friend and literal Trek EXPERT Jeffrey Harlan, now lovingly known as as Mr. AtoZ. I also desperately wanted to bring in one of Trek.fm’s biggest supporters onto the show. The CHIEF Ken Tripp beamed on as Sound Engineer (editor) and we forged our very own TOS "triumvirate". I can’t thank them enough for what they have brought to the show and personally to my life as my good and dear friends.

On August 22, 2016 Mr. AtoZ and I had the pleasure to record our final episode together as hosts of Standard Orbit. Thank you everyone from the bottom of our hearts for making our journey here at Trek.fm so amazing. Thank you Christopher Jones for giving us the opportunity to share our Star Trek viewpoints with the fans and listeners. We have handed the command codes over to The Chief and Zach Moore, and I have every confidence that they will continue the mission with great zeal and honor. Thank you everyone for sharing this journey with us. Live Long and Prosper.
