Standard Orbit: A Star Trek Original Series Podcast
136: Star Trek Beyond - Mars Attacks!

Star Trek Beyond.

This episode of Standard Orbit marks the beginning of Phase III, the NCC-1701-A, call it what you will but either way Ken and Zach are excited to take the conn and discuss the latest and greatest installment in the Kelvin Timeline...Star Trek Beyond!

With 2016 marking the Star Trek franchise's golden anniversary, there was much anticipation for the third film in the newly christened Kelvin Timeline.  Following the divisive reaction to Star Trek Into Darkness and the troubled production history leading up to its follow-up, Star Trek Beyond had a lot to overcome. We are happy to report, it succeeded with flying colors!

Now three years into their five year mission, where to we find our beloved crew? How did Justin Lin handle taking over the director's chair from J.J. Abrams? Has the villain-of-the-week code finally been cracked with Idris Elba's Krall? How did the passing of Leonard Nimoy influence the film? And where do we want to see the film series go next? Join us for our discussion of these questions...and BEYOND!

135: STLV 50!
Star Trek Las Vegas.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, it's an away mission to the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas as Refit Crew takes a break from the convention floor to discuss their thoughts on Star Trek Las Vegas...from a TOS perspective of course!

It's not everyday one gets the opportunity to see all the surviving members of the TOS main cast live and in person, but we had the pleasure of exactly that at STLV50! In this round table we discuss Shatner being as lively as ever in his 80s, Koenig's recent thoughts on the decades old grudge between the "little four" and the captain, Takei's take on Sulu's sexuality  in Star Trek Beyond, and finally the ever-elegant Nichelle Nichols. We wrap up with our favorite overall moments of STLV and areas where there might be room for improvement in future conventions.

S1: Commodore's Log Supplemental

Norm's Reflections on The Kelvin Era Movies.

Over the last several shows on Standard Orbit - specifically episodes 133 and 134, the Commodore (Norman C. Lao) did not have the opportunity to participate in all of the thought provoking and exciting conversations as The Chief (Ken Tripp), Mr. AtoZ (Jeffrey Harlan) and new Standard Orbit crewmember Zach Moore delved deeply into the Kelvin Era cinematic universe. On the cusp of the epically anticipated Star Trek BEYOND, Norm really wanted to participate in his own way. So he decided to pull rank here and record his own thoughts on this new movie universe.

Admittedly he was ashamed of his attitude towards Star Trek 2009 and in this Supplemental Commodore's Log entry, he confesses how his fandom almost stalled as his love of the Original Series blinded him to the very tenant that Star Trek was built upon: IDIC...Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. Challenged by that very ideal and axiom of TOS, Norm makes that very same plea to the Star Trek fandom at large and hopes that we all as the fanbase strive to understand the current state of Star Trek and move forward in a collective and positive manner.

Note: This recording was made PRIOR to the weekend before Star Trek BEYOND.
