Standard Orbit: A Star Trek Original Series Podcast (general)
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - The Audio Drama.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is a rather infamous film both in and out of Star Trek circles,  but we here at Standard Orbit happen to love it. In celebration of our 300th episode, hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart decided to do something special: an audio drama of The Final Frontier based on an earlier draft of the film's script (featuring the rock monster) and with the dream casting of the film, Sean Connery as Sybok.

We can't thank our fellow hosts and listeners who participated in this massive undertaking enough: Tony Robinson, John Mills, Lee Sargent, Justin Oser, Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, Duncan Barrett, Brandon-Shea Mutala, Zachary Fruhling, Norman C. Lao and A.J. Black. As the great man once said, "It was...fun"

Standard Orbit 298: The Rise Of Fan Service

JJ Abrams, Star Trek, Star Wars And Fan Service.

With the recent release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, JJ Abrams has now directed two Star Trek and two Star Wars films. Each respective first film was embraced by the overwhelming majority of casual and die hard fans alike, while each respective second has been divisive to say the least. Is fan service (or attempted fan service) to blame?

This week on Standard Orbit hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart discuss the concept of fan service and how perhaps too much creeped in to JJ's second films in each franchise. What is fan service, is it what the writers and directors of our favorite franchises think it is, does is do more harm than good, and do we as fans really even want it? All this and more on this week's Standard Orbit, boldly listen!

Standard Orbit 295: D.C. Fontana

Remembering Dorothy Fontana (1939- 2019).

This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore reflect on the life and work of Dorothy "D.C." Fontana. Passing away this past week at the age of eighty, Dorothy was one of the foundational creative forces behind the Star Trek universe and we celebrate her legacy by exploring her incredible Star Trek resume.

A writer and eventual story editor on The Original Series, Dorothy received a writing credit for 10 episodes but had a hand in countless more, directly responsible for such classics as This Side of Paradise, Journey to Babel, and The Enterprise Incident. We take a look at all these episodes, her work beyond TOS in The Animated Series, The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, and examine what made her writing so memorable and able to stand the test of time.

An underrated and oft-overlooked episode, we discuss the glimpses it gives us into Klingon culture, how it puts the folly of prejudice on full display, the influences it may or may not have had on the movie era and much more!

Despite their reputation as the crew of Enterprise's ever-present adversaries, the Klingons actually appear in a mere seven episodes of The Original Series; Day of the Dove might be the definitive Klingon episode of TOS! Standard Orbit 290: A Friendship That Defined Them Both

Mind Meld.

In 2001, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy sat down for a candid (as candid as can be expected in front of a film crew anyway) conversation about their lives, their friendship, and of course Star Trek. This was the documentary Mind Meld: Secrets Behind The Journey Of A Lifetime, and this week on Standard Orbit hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart discuss this peek into the minds of the two men most synonymous with Star Trek.

In what way did Nimoy's understanding of show business differ from Shatner in their early days? How did Shatner's casting as the then-new Captain Kirk influence Nimoy's performance as Spock? Why could Shatner stop smoking cold turkey while Nimoy battled addiction for decades? And what does all this say about both men? All this and more in this week's Standard Orbit, boldly listen!

It is time to geek out with Hayley and Ken as we discuss the size and functionality of starships in the Star Trek universe and beyond. Why are the bad ships always bigger? Should size even matter? Did the Kelvin timeline universe get it right or were they too big?

Starships have always been a mainstay and as much of a character as the cast. Ken and Hayley discuss the potential reasons for the size of the ships between the series and in the Kelvin timeline. Get you Geek on and Boldly listen!

Standard Orbit 286: Return To Yesterday

Season 4 Episode Pitches.

As we all know, the USS Enterprise was on a five year mission. Unfortunately that mission was cut short by NBC when it canceled Star Trek after just three seasons, but what if it wasn't? This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart each pitch a story idea for a hypothetical fourth season of TOS.

What kind of episodes would Zach and Hayley have wanted to seen on TOS? How would an almost certainly slashed budget affect these stories? What guest stars or alien races would make return appearances? Is there time travel involved? Spoiler: Of course there is! Boldly listen!

Standard Orbit 283: "You Should Have Let Me Sleep!"

Villains Of The Kelvin Timeline.

The Star Trek movies have (with rare exception) usually featured a special guest villain, and this trend has continued into the Kelvin Timeline era. Nero, John Harr---Khan, and Krall have all faced off against the new cast of Captain Kirk and the Enterprise, and this week on Standard Orbit hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss and rank them.

Was Nero just another Khan rehash or something more? Would John Harr---Khan been better off had has indeed merely been John Harrison? As the only one of the three not to get a fleshed out backstory in the Star Trek expanded universe of books and comics, is Krall ripe for more exploration as a character? Standard Orbit 282: I Am Unicorn Dog!

TOS Episodes In The Alternate Realities Collective.

"Star Trek Fan Collectives" were a series of DVD collections released in the 2000s that featured episodes from across all the series that shared a common theme. This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart are joined by their counterparts from the 24th century Amy Nelson, Justin Oser and Joe Keegan from Earl Grey to discuss the TOS episodes included in the Alternate Realities Collective.

What makes Mirror, Mirror such a classic episode? Are The Alternative Factor and Turnabout Intruder really that bad? Like Kirk himself in the episode does The Enemy Within have two sides, both good and dark? Tune in to Earl Grey tomorrow for part two of this conversation where we talk the TNG episodes included in the Alternate Realities Collective, boldly listen!

Standard Orbit 277: Emergency Alert, Negative Control At Helm

The Motion Picture Theatrical Cut vs. Director's Edition.

With the fortieth anniversary of Star Trek: The Motion Picture upon us there have been whispers of a 4K upgrade of the film and beyond even that, a 4K (and for the first time, high definition) upgrade of the Director's Edition from 2001. This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart discuss the likelihood of this coming to pass and also compare the theatrical and director's cuts of the film.

What changes to the Director's Edition work, and which don't? Are there some areas where the theatrical cut is superior? Can The Motion Picture finally start getting the respect it deserves? All this and more in this week's Standard Orbit, boldly listen!

Standard Orbit 272: Less Creative Is The Goal

Alternate TOS Episode Titles.

The Original Series is well known for it's flowery, cultured and sometimes dare we say pretentious episode titles, so this week on Standard Orbit hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore thought it would be fun to do a run down of the first season's episode titles and reimagine them as if they were titled at the height the "Berman" era of Star Trek when the music was wallpaper and the titles were too.

What are our favorite episode titles of season one? Which titles would already fit perfectly into the "Berman" era among such classic titles like The Void, The Chute, The Catwalk, etc. Does Zach change the conditions of the test one too many times? Standard Orbit 268: TOS Season 0.5

The Original Series in Discovery Season 2, Part 1.

In the final scene of Discovery's first season, the U.S.S. Enterprise appeared and set Star Trek fandom on fire with anticipation for what that meant for the new series' sophomore year. What followed was Christopher Pike becoming the captain of the U.S.S. Discovery, spending half a season on the search for Spock, and some...convoluted explanations to attempt make everything fit with established canon.

This week on Standard Orbit, host Zach Moore is joined by co-creator and former co-host of Primitive Culture Tony Black to discuss what worked and what didn't about making Discovery's second season such a direct prequel to The Original Series. Does Spock having a secret sister pay off in any way? What did we think about the new bridge of the Enterprise? Can Star Trek continue to thrive by continuing to look backward? All this and more on this week's Standard Orbit, boldly listen!

Standard Orbit 267: The James Bond of Star Trek

The Many Faces of Captain Pike.

When Star Trek first went into production it wasn't Captain James Kirk in the center seat of the USS Enterprise, it was Captain Christopher Pike. First brought to life by actor Jeffrey Hunter, Pike went on to be portrayed by three other actors and has carved out his own niche in the mythos. This week on Standard Orbit hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore
and Hayley Stoddart discuss the many faces of Captain Pike and his resurgence as a character in recent years.

Could Jeffrey Hunter have carried a series as a leading man, and why did he leave Star Trek after the first pilot? What about Sean Kenney's important, but thankless turn as Pike? Did Bruce Greenwood's new take on the character in the Kelvin Timeline pave the way for Anson Mount's Pike on Discovery? All this and much more on this week's Standard Orbit, boldly listen!

High Drama of TOS and The Movies.

This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Hayley Stoddart talk the most dramatic moments of TOS and the movies. Conspiracies, death and destruction across all three eras of Captain Kirk's crew. What moments provided a punch to the gut or a hit to the feels when it was least expected?

Is the impact of Spock's death diminished by his resurrection? Which Enterprise's destruction carries the most weight? As much as we hated to lose Bruce Greenwood's Pike, was his death a necessary lynchpin for the rest of Star Trek Into Darkness? All this and more on this week's Standard Orbit, boldly listen!

TOS Episodes with Section 31

This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore, and Hayley Stoddart talk Section 31 in the TOS universe. The Standard Orbit crew reviews the episodes that could have had Section 31 involved in the shadows.

Could Section 31 been behind the events of Assignment Earth, Journey to Babel, and Undiscovered Country and many others? Zach, Hayley, and Ken explore how this covert organization may have been behind some of the more suspicious plot lines involving Captain Kirk and the Enterprise team. Boldly Listen!

Standard Orbit 260: How Do You View Your Trek?

Episodic vs. Serialized Viewing

Zach, Hayley, and Ken pilot Standard Orbit in a new direction by discussing the serialized approach of Discovery with the styles of TOS and the other Trek series and movies.

Viewing habits have evolved and so has Star Trek. Does a serialized series have a more difficult time than an episodic series? Did the TOS movies start the process of the longer story arc in Star Trek? What will CBS do with the new animated series or Picard out of the gate. Which series had the best formula? Standard Orbit 256: We Forgot Nimbus III

Romulans and Klingons.

This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss the the two primary antagonists of The Original Series: the Romulans and the Klingons. One is an honorable foe with a cloaking device and a code of duty, the other is a ruthless adversary who often works behind the scenes to undermine the Federation by proxy. Which is which you ask? That depends on the era of Star Trek you're watching!

The Romulans and Klingons have shared and swapped many cultural traits over the years, sometimes in-universe like ship designs, other times by merely the executive decision of writers. We talk this back and forth as well as the roles each species played on TOS and beyond, and some what ifs had they been utilized differently in the movie era.

Odd Jobs On The Enterprise.

This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss the odd jobs on the original Enterprise. From historians to meteorologists, often times the characters who hold these positions appear out of nowhere for one story and are never heard from again. Which of these highly specialized jobs make sense to have on a starship, which ones don't, and what other types of officers would we have liked to have seen on the Enterprise?

Do technicians really do all the work? Counselors weren't standard crew members until the 24th century, but there were psychiatrists on board in the 23rd and just as important. Shouldn't the Enterprise be leaving sociologists on every planet where they uproot the population's way of life before leaving for the next mission? What was the story behind the wildly inaccurate Mego Gorn action figure? Why did the licensees keep guessing wrong on when to make a merchandising push during the movie era? Standard Orbit 247: The Scooby-Doo Ending

The Nicholas Meyer Director's Cuts.

As Leonardo da Vinci once said, "Art is never finished, only abandoned." Nicholas Meyer would seem to agree, as he returned to both of the Star Trek films he directed (The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country) to create alternate director's cut. These re-edits aren't to the extreme that some others films have undergone (Blade Runner, Batman v. Superman, etc.), but make a significant impact on the narratives none the less.

This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss the differences between these alternate versions and their original theatrical counterparts, which versions they find superior, and some of their non-Star Trek, favorite director's cuts. Boldly listen!

Standard Orbit 246: A Tale Of Three Producers

Coon, Lucas and Roddenberry in Season Two.

This week on Standard Orbit, host Zach Moore is joined by author and critic Darren Mooney to discuss the second season of TOS and how each of its three show runners brought their own unique stamp to the episodes they produced. Gene Coon, John Meredyth Lucas and Gene Roddenberry all had a turn at the reins, all to very different results.

How did the two Genes differ in their approach to Star Trek? Was Gene Coon's use to familiar elements a double edged sword? Would Star Trek have endured if it had lasted only two seasons? What's so bad about The Omega Glory? All this and much more in this week's Standard Orbit, boldly listen!

We talk Jud Taylor's unique directorial style, the use of stock footage, Star Trek's shifting warp speed scale and why the parables of racism and hate this episode presents are unfortunately as relevant as ever today.

Standard Orbit 233: Another Speaker At A Star Trek Convention

No Kirks and a New Spock.

This week hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart talk no Kirks in Star Trek 4 and a new Spock in Discovery. What would the next Kelvin Timeline film look like without Chris Pine? Should Captain Kirk be recast again, or just written out entirely? Same goes for his on screen dad Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk, who was teased as appearing in Star Trek 4 all the way back in 2016.

Speaking of recasting we have a new Spock coming to Discovery in the person of Ethan Peck, grandson of Hollywood legend Gregory Peck. How do we feel about a second "young Spock" existing concurrently with Zachary Quinto's? We also revisit the conversation about whether or not we'd have preferred to see Kelvin Timeline actors on Discovery, or for that matter any TOS characters at all.

Standard Orbit 227: A Big Glass Ball in Space

Yorktown Station

This week on Standard Orbit hosts Hayley Stoddart and Ken Tripp discuss all things Space Station Yorktown. Star Trek Beyond was a hit for most fans and one of the more interesting locations was Yorktown Space Station. Ken and Hayley review the specifications, community, culture, and technology of this huge space station.

What was the first reaction to seeing Yorktown? Did we get to see enough of the Federation? How was the station lighted and how did the gravity function? Would you be able to ride the mono-rail without getting vertigo? Hayley and Ken do their best to explore these questions and other aspects as well as why it was named Yorktown. Boldly Listen!

All this and what our favorite uniform styles are, and what we might be wearing the next time you see us at a convention! Join Starfleet and don your uniform in this week’s Standard Orbit!

Standard Orbit 222: Dumb and Death

Favorite Red Shirt Moments.

The term "red shirt" is an ingrained in pop culture as "live long and prosper," "warp speed" and "beam me up Scotty." If the stereotype is to be believed, wearing a red uniform on the Enterprise is basically a death sentence...but is it really?

In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart explore the cliché, its validity, and discuss some of the their favorite red shirt moments from The Original Series.

The Wrath of Khan vs. First Contact.

Trek Madness is back by popular demand! In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore, and Hayley Stoddart are joined by the hosts of Earl Grey to debate the best of the best of the Star Trek movies: The Wrath of Khan vs. First Contact!

Nine out of ten Trekkies on the street would agree that these two films are the best of their respective film franchises, so how does TOS' cream of the crop measure up to TNG's? Both feature themes of revenge, returning villains, epic space battles and memorable musical scores; we compare and contrast all this and much more in Trek Movie Madness!

There is plenty of speculation and expectations amongst fans with regards to the meeting of the Enterprise and Discovery and their respective crews. With this in mind, we discuss what we are excited about...and maybe not so excited about. Then we share our excitement over having the first female director in the film franchise, what a fourth Kelvin Timeline movie might look like, and what the other (possibly Tarantino-directed) movie might be.

The Lost Episodes, Part III.

There are dozens of story ideas, outlines, and scripts submitted to or commissioned for TOS that never went into production. In this episode of Standard Orbit hosts Ken Tripp, Zach Moore and Hayley Stoddart share the synopses of and their thoughts on three more of these would-be episodes.

The crew visits a "Confederate States of America" planet, but with a twist. A sister ship of the Enterprise is found adrift, its crew dead, and an unseen menace is to blame. The Enterprise and another ship, the Momentous, get caught in a pre-Tholian web in space...in an episode written by William Shatner! Also, we discuss what's scarier: insects or reptiles.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan's importance in Star Trek history cannot be overstated, it revived the franchise from the brink of oblivion and paved the way for a feature film franchise that (with a brief interruption from 2002-2009) continues to this day. But did you know The Wrath of Khan also revolutionized the home video market?

In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore are joined by master of all things Khan knowledge, John Tenuto to discuss how The Wrath of Khan became the best selling videocassette in history to that time and changed the way studios did business after a film exited theaters. We also discuss the past, present and future of Star Trek on home video.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore are joined by Larry "Dr. Trek" Nemecek to discuss this hotly debated topic among fandom and how these seemingly incongruous and contradictory uniform patches can be reconciled within greater Star Trek continuity.

From production memos in response to The Omega Glory to the long-awaited Defiant uniform patches finally turning up on Enterprise, we attempt to trace the confusing history of the Starfleet insignias, and the starships and registry numbers associated with them.

Standard Orbit 211: Kicked Upstairs

Gene Roddenberry and Harve Bennett

From the launch of the original series through Star Trek: The Motion Picture; Gene Roddenberry was synonymous with all things Star Trek. With the franchise's future in the balance and in order to bring in a new movie with strict cost control and more resembling the TV show: Harve Bennett was brought in to deliver.

Zach and Ken discuss this interesting dynamic between these two men and the unpleasantness surrounding their relationship. We focus on the irony of how both individuals actually had a great positive impact on each other but jealousy and pettiness never allowed these two giants in Star Trek lore reconcile their relationship.

Standard Orbit 210: Foreheadgate

The Evolution of the Klingons.

There are few races in Star Trek as iconic as the Klingons. Introduced in the first season of The Original Series, the warrior race remains as relevant as ever over fifty years later playing an integral role in the latest entry in the franchise, Discovery.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore talk the Klingons' ever-changing appearance from Kor to T’Kuvma, if the franchise may have gone too far in explaining out-of-universe production aesthetics in-universe, and how the Klingons are forever tied to the Romulans.

Also, Zach proves to be prophetic in his prediction of a certain starship's appearance in Discovery's season finale. Unintentional spoilers for Will You Take My Hand?, which aired the night after we recorded this podcast!

Standard Orbit 209: The Lost Episodes, Part II

More Never-Produced TOS Episodes.

There are dozens of story ideas, outlines, and scripts submitted to or commissioned for TOS that never went into production. In this episode of Standard Orbit hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore share the synopses of and their thoughts on three more of these would-be episodes.

From the minds of renown Star Trek writers David Gerrold, Norman Spinrad, Gene Coon and John Meredyth Lucas, these stories present us with a distracting creature that creates mayhem, a megalomaniacal Federation sociologist, and a xenophobic, hidden civilization.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, Zach Moore is joined by Brandon-Shea Mutala to continue our series of commentaries on the Robert Bloch episode of TOS. This time we're covering the second season's Wolf in the Fold! One of the few Scotty-centric episodes of the series, it features some...interesting story points including one of fiction's favorite go-to villains, Jack The Ripper!

Our conversation hits on this episode's awkward gender politics, the movies that scare us most, potential fifth season Enterprise plots, and if this might episode that Quentin Tarantino picks to remake as the new Star Trek 4.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore don't settle the  great Star Trek vs. Star Wars debate one and for all, but they at least have a good time talking about that other Star franchise. It's their present to each other and the listeners this Christmas. May the Force be with you!
