Standard Orbit 250: Who Mourns For Phillips? Odd Jobs On The Enterprise. This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss the odd jobs on the original Enterprise. From historians to meteorologists, often times the characters who hold these positions appear out of nowhere for one story and are never heard from again. Which of these highly specialized jobs make sense to have on a starship, which ones don't, and what other types of officers would we have liked to have seen on the Enterprise? Do technicians really do all the work? Counselors weren't standard crew members until the 24th century, but there were psychiatrists on board in the 23rd and just as important. Shouldn't the Enterprise be leaving sociologists on every planet where they uproot the population's way of life before leaving for the next mission? All this and more in this week's Standard Orbit, boldly listen! Chapters Hosts Production |

Standard Orbit 249: The Toys That Made Us Star Trek Toys With John Tenuto. This week on Standard Orbit, host Zach Moore is joined by sociology professor and Star Trek historian John Tenuto to discuss the long history of Star Trek toys. We discuss John and his wife Mary Jo's appearances on Netflix's "The Toys That Made Us," the famous (and infamous in some cases) action figures by Mego, the ever-other-movie approach to toys and merchandise in the TOS movie era, the evolution of action figures in the modern age of collectables and many of John and Zach's favorite Star Trek toys from over the years. What was the story behind the wildly inaccurate Mego Gorn action figure? Why did the licensees keep guessing wrong on when to make a merchandising push during the movie era? The TNG Galoob line: the forgotten Star Trek toy line? All this and much more in this special Christmas-sized edition of Standard Orbit! Merry Christmas! Chapters Host Guest Production |

Standard Orbit 248: Renegade? Captain Kirk's Evolution Captain Kirk is one of the most popular characters in pop-culture and Science Fiction. Over the years his character has evolved and even redesigned. Hayley Stoddart and Ken Tripp explore the good Captain from TOS to the movies to the Kelvin Timeline. This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Hayley Stoddart take a deep dive into what defines Captain Kirk. Is he really a cocky ladies-man rule breaking warrior or are these descriptions a big oversimplification? We ask you to boldly listen and decide for yourself! Chapters Hosts Production |

Standard Orbit 247: The Scooby-Doo Ending The Nicholas Meyer Director's Cuts. As Leonardo da Vinci once said, "Art is never finished, only abandoned." Nicholas Meyer would seem to agree, as he returned to both of the Star Trek films he directed (The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country) to create alternate director's cut. These re-edits aren't to the extreme that some others films have undergone (Blade Runner, Batman v. Superman, etc.), but make a significant impact on the narratives none the less. This week on Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss the differences between these alternate versions and their original theatrical counterparts, which versions they find superior, and some of their non-Star Trek, favorite director's cuts. Boldly listen! Chapters Hosts Production |

Standard Orbit 246: A Tale Of Three Producers Coon, Lucas and Roddenberry in Season Two. This week on Standard Orbit, host Zach Moore is joined by author and critic Darren Mooney to discuss the second season of TOS and how each of its three show runners brought their own unique stamp to the episodes they produced. Gene Coon, John Meredyth Lucas and Gene Roddenberry all had a turn at the reins, all to very different results. How did the two Genes differ in their approach to Star Trek? Was Gene Coon's use to familiar elements a double edged sword? Would Star Trek have endured if it had lasted only two seasons? What's so bad about The Omega Glory? In 1998 the Sci-Fi Channel remastered TOS in picture and sound quality, restored every episode to its original run time (they had been edited down over the years for syndication), and aired them five nights a week in their original broadcast order. Speaking of recasting we have a new Spock coming to Discovery in the person of Ethan Peck, grandson of Hollywood legend Gregory Peck. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Zach Moore is joined by Brandon-Shea Mutala to continue our series of commentaries on the Robert Bloch episode of TOS. This time we're covering the second season's Wolf in the Fold! One of the few Scotty-centric episodes of the series, it features some...interesting story points including one of fiction's favorite go-to villains, Jack The Ripper! Our conversation hits on this episode's awkward gender politics, the movies that scare us most, potential fifth season Enterprise plots, and if this might episode that Quentin Tarantino picks to remake as the new Star Trek 4.
