Star Trek Continues. The Original Series quite infamously was never able to complete the five year mission that was promised in its opening credits. This sly attempt by Gene Roddenberry to will a five season run of his new series into existence by mere narration was unfortunately not to be. In recent years many Star Trek fan productions have taken it upon themselves to complete the mission, and this month Star Trek Continues has done exactly that. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Zach Moore is joined by host of Continuing Mission Tony Robinson to discuss this fan favorite fan series now that it's concluded, how it fits in with TOS, and also tease an exciting new collaboration coming soon to Trek.fm!

We talk the cons and pros of what many consider to be the worst film of the franchise, the many obstacles that Shanter faced trying to translate his ambitious ideas to the screen, where we rank The Final Frontier in the Star Trek movie canon, and much more. Standard Orbit 196: Star Trek Origins: Season 3 Iconic Star Trek in Season 3. We've had an ongoing miniseries on Standard Orbit we've called "Star Trek Origins" where we explore certain touchstones both real and fictional that became defining focal points for the franchise for years to come. You can find these previous discussions in Standard Orbit 139, 145 and 161 and this week we're back at it again! In this episode of Standard Orbit, host Zach Moore is joined by author and critic Darren Mooney to examine how the often maligned third season is responsible for a lot of what we now deem iconic Star Trek. Honorable Klingons, Klingon/Romulan coexistence, ladykiller Kirk...the list goes on!

Standard Orbit 195: It's A Death Machine The Transporter. The transporter is at the same time one of the most remarkable and terrifying pieces of technology featured in Star Trek. It dissembles its subjects at a molecular level, converts their matter into energy, then reassembles as matter at their new location. Would you be willing to go through the process? In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss if they themselves would be willing to use a transporter, whether or not it is a death machine, and its many uses that go beyond what was intended by Starfleet engineers.

Catspaw Commentary. Happy Halloween! If Star Trek ever had a Halloween episode, it was Catspaw. The first episode produced for the second season, it's probably for the best it was held back a few weeks to come out the week of Halloween in 1967. Amok Time, the first episode broadcast for the second season, is one of Star Trek's best episodes. This...is not. In this episode of Standard Orbit, host Zach Moore is joined by Brandon-Shea Mutala for a commentary on what is widely considered one of The Original Series' worst episodes. Shuttlecraft in TOS. As we see across the Star Trek franchise, a flight in a Federation shuttle craft is probably the riskiest thing you can do in the 23rd and 24th centuries. While it set the standard for all future "stranded in a shuttlecraft" stories with The Galileo Seven, TOS used its shuttles in more ways than just that and in this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss all such instances in The Original Series and the films. Did TOS shuttles have warp drive? How easy is it to steal a shuttlecraft? Why take a shuttle when you could just use the transporter? These questions and much more as well as Zach's plug for a guest spot on To The Journey!

In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss the many trials and court martials that took place over The Original Series and the films. The conversation takes many turns including favorite courtroom drama TV series, the minutia of dress uniforms, and to the role of the death penalty in the Star Trek future. Standard Orbit 192: Ape Face has the Conn TOS and Planet of the Apes: How could one be the other? In this episode of Standard Orbit: Nic Anastassiou, Amy Nelson and Ken Tripp talk about the idea of taking two great franchises who came into being in the same time-frame and meshing the two very different views of the future. As fans of both franchises and fans of both Roddenberry and Serling; could an episode of the original series be constructed to incorporate the Planet of the Apes. Nic, Amy, and Ken come up with creative scenarios that explore combining the elements. Would it be an alien putting our crew in a different universe? Could it be a timeline disconnect? Standard Orbit 178: The Gospel According to Star Trek Author Kevin C. Neece Interview. On first glance, the Christian worldview and the humanistic worldview of Star Trek would seem to have nothing in common. After all Star Trek takes place in a future when religion has essentially vanished from Earth. In that case, how can there even be a "gospel according to Star Trek"? In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore are joined by author and speaker Kevin C. Neece to answer that very question. Through The Gospel According to Star Trek book series and his The Undiscovered Country Project, Kevin poses questions about the spiritual significance of Star Trek as both popular art and cultural phenomenon from a Christian perspective. Standard Orbit 177: Revenge Is A Dish Best Served Cold Revenge Stories. As the old Klingon proverb goes, "Revenge is a dish best served cold." When it comes to Star Trek, it seems revenge is a dish best served again and again. It's a story trope the that franchise frequently revisits for better or for worse; sometimes you get The Wrath of Khan, sometimes you get Turnabout Intruder.
In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore examine the many instances where revenge drives the narrative of TOS episodes, movies and reboots, which motivations are more relatable than others, and what Star Trek tries to teach us through these extreme examples of obsession and vengeance. Standard Orbit 175: Continually Breaking Continuity Continuity Conundrums in TOS With the first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery hitting the Internet the fan reaction has been divisive. For a series that reportedly takes place in the Prime Timeline around the same time as The Cage, things don't exactly jibe. How could Star Trek contradict its own continuity so blatantly? Well...it's happened before. Ken and Zach are joined by patron Nic Anastassiou to discuss some of their favorite continuity conundrums in the canon of TOS, as well as if breaks in established canon are truly deal breakers for enjoying a well told story. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Will Stape joins us to discuss the portrayal of love, relationships and sexuality in TOS as examined in his recent book, "Star Trek Sex: Analyzing the Most Sexually Charged Episodes of the Original Series." Will is also one of a select few freelance writers who sold scripts to The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine back in the days of Star Trek's open script submission policy. He shares the inspiration and production stories behind his episodes Homeward and Prophet Motive! Host Zach Moore Guest Will Stape Feature Welcome to Standard Orbit! Movie Sequels to TOS Episodes. When Harve Bennett took the reins of the Star Trek franchise after The Motion Picture, he famously watched all 79 episodes of The Original Series to both familiarize himself with the show as well as mine it for potential sequel ideas. He zeroed in on Space Seed and the rest is history, but what if he'd picked something else? In this episode of Standard Orbit, Ken and Zach each share their top three TOS episodes they would've liked to see movie sequels to. They also shout out to Standard Orbit's ever growing ranks of associate producers and read more listener email!

Standard Orbit 165: Star Trek At Its Best Revisiting the TOS Film Era. In this age of franchises and sequels one could easily take the six TOS films for granted, but they are what many consider to be Star Trek at its best. In this episode of Standard Orbit, friend of the network Tony Black joins Zach to discuss their shared love of the TOS film era. Releasing six films over twelve years is no easy feat, which is even more impressive when you consider there was no franchise road map or master plan. This singular focus of storytelling lead to a wide variety of films unmatched by any other franchise, and we celebrate that while part of a greater whole, each story stands alone as a unique, satisfying and self contained experience. Ken and Zach recount their personal encounters with Nichelle Nichols and Kim Stinger, as well as discuss the rise of Zoe Saldana as one of the biggest stars in Hollywood today, and how each actress has carried the mantle of Uhura with class. The BBC Banned Episodes.
When Miri first broadcast in the UK in 1970 it caused such a stir that not only did the BBC take it off the airwaves for decades, but three other episodes (Plato's Stepchildren, The Empath and Whom Gods Destroy) were completely banned until 1990! In this episode of Standard Orbit we explore British vs. American censorship and sensibilities when it comes to entertainment, and what we think might've made these episodes too hot for TV in the UK. Could the graphic depictions of disease and torture have gone too far in Miri and The Empath? Might the legendary interracial kiss between Kirk and Uhura have factored into the decision to ban Plato's Stepchildren? What's so offensive about Whom Gods Destroy? What other notable censorship edits did the BBC make to the episodes the did broadcast? All this as well as Ken and Zach's thoughts on two modern day sitcoms they just can't stand. Hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore Feature Welcome to Standard Orbit! (00:01:08) British vs. American Censorship (00:03:37) Miri (00:10:17) Plato's Stepchildren (00:17:09) The Empath (00:24:15) Whom Gods Destroy (00:26:21) Ways and Opportunities to Watch These Episodes in the UK (00:30:54) Censorship Edits to Other Episodes (00:35:37) More "Appropriate" Episodes to Ban? Standard Orbit 154: By Any Other Name What is in a name? What is in a title? Zach and Ken explore the more interesting episode titles of the original series and "try" to correlate the names to the plots of the episodes. In some cases; they're an easy match. In other cases; there isn't a direct link as to what the episode was about. In a very humbling moment for Ken--confusion on a title and actual episode becomes apparent. No editing here-Ken owns his error and makes for some good fun at his own expense. Zach and Ken explore all the more interesting titles and ask for your input as to what some of these titles mean to you and how you have been interpreting them. Ken and Zach put out a host of theories and reveal the history of some of these lines from great literature. Hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore Features Welcome to Standard Orbit!
