Standard Orbit 153: Earl Grey Generations Two Podcasts One Destiny. Zach and Ken attempt to discuss Star Trek's Christmas movie: Generations when the Earl Grey crew of Lee, Amy, and Richard beam into Standard Orbit studios. This crossover podcast discusses the Star Trek crossover movie. Why did they have to kill Capt. Kirk, the Enterprise, and Captain Picard's family? Was a good villain and was the Nexus a good plot device? How did the Flagship of the Federation lose to an old Bird of Prey? With two podcast crews representing their genres; we explore this controversial film with good humor and real passion. We hope you enjoy this approach and one we hope to employ in the future when TOS and TNG elements cross paths. Be sure to listen to the end as a hidden challenge is revealed and we find out if it was successful. Standard Orbit 150: Practically CGI The Special Effects of the Star Trek Movies. Star Trek has always been more about substance than spectacle, but that's not to say the franchise hasn't given us its fair share of impressive visuals over the years, especially in the films. We're taking a look at the evolution of the special effects from The Motion Picture all the way up through the Kelvin Timeline films, discussing highlights, low-lights, and of course old school practical techniques vs. modern computer generated images. Is there truly no comparison to The Motion Picture? Are The Final Frontier's special effects really that bad? What were they thinking reusing footage from climax of The Undiscovered Country in the following film? All this and a fun story about whales from the Chief in this episode of Standard Orbit! Montalban v. Cumberbatch "Khan Noonien Singh is the most dangerous adversary the Enterprise ever faced. He is brilliant, ruthless and he will not hesitate to kill every single one of you." Those are the words Ambassador Spock used to describe Star Trek's most iconic villain, and in this episode of Standard Orbit our...Khanversation revolves around who makes a better Khan, Montalban or Cumberbatch? We're going to look at the Khans from the perspective of character, screen presence, passion, and villainy. A Khanparison if you will. The Kelvin Timeline did not branch off from the Prime Timeline until 2233, so the Khan we meet in Into Darkness is truly the same Khan we meet in Space Seed. However, the circumstances surrounding their revivals are very different, which inform the character and his actions moving forward in both timelines. We delve into the drives and motivations of each, which Khan was a "greater" villain, the screen presence of both of the incredible actors who portrayed him. And it wouldn't be an episode of Standard Orbit without a few tangents for good measure. Hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore Feature Welcome to Standard Orbit! We talk band-aids, beards, parallel universes, Jet Li's The One, and so much more, including all the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding The Alternative Factor, in this week's episode of Standard Orbit. We had such a fun time transposing first season TNG episodes to fourth season TOS episodes, we thought we'd do it again! This time we're looking at the Next Generation's second season for potential adventures that could've easily been part of The Original Series' fifth. Could Uhura have been the mother of The Child? What if Harry Mudd was The Outrageous Okana? Double the Shantner, double the fun in Time Squared? And could the much maligned Shades of Gray actually made for a fitting conclusion to the five year mission in 1971? All this and a few fun tangents as usual in this episode of Standard Orbit. Star Trek Origins: Cloaking Device In this episode of Standard Orbit, we launch into our second origins outline looking at the deployment and use of the cloaking device from its initial debut in Balance of Terror, to its evolution over the course of the franchise through The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. A game changing piece of technology, we explore how having the cloaking device adds such a huge tactical advantage to those who have it, try to understand the reasoning behind Starfleet not using it themselves (until the Dominion War) and its applications beyond starships such as personal cloaking tech and cloaked mines. Standard Orbit 143: Right Click, Word Replacement TNG as TOS. The early seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation get a bad rep, and are often criticized as feeling like an "extension of TOS" or "1960s TV in the 1980s." Right or wrong, good or bad, in this episode of Standard Orbit, Ken and Zach discuss a handful of season one TNG adventures that feel more at home on Kirk's Enterprise than Picard's. The Man Trap Commentary. 50 years ago on this very day, Star Trek hit the airwaves for the very first time at 8:30pm EST on NBC. That episode was The Man Trap, and what better way to celebrate Star Trek's golden anniversary than by watching it along with us? Although the sixth episode of the series produced, The Man Trap was chosen by NBC to be the first episode of Star Trek broadcast. This has spurred much debate over the years as to what would've been a more "proper" premiere and generated a lot of unfair criticism towards The Man Trap, which we actually found to be a great introduction to the series! So dim the lights, put some extra salt on your popcorn, and travel back to a simpler time when this hour of television was the entirety of the Star Trek franchise. We're still talking about it 50 years later, so it must have done something right! Hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore Feature Welcome to Standard Orbit! Reflections on Standard Orbit and BEYOND. From the Commodore's Personal Log: On January 11, 2016, the REFIT of Standard Orbit took to the airwaves with a new sound, a new crew and a new mission starting with Episode 111: Hailing Frequencies Open. My first and ONLY choice for First Officer was my good friend and literal Trek EXPERT Jeffrey Harlan, now lovingly known as as Mr. AtoZ. I also desperately wanted to bring in one of Trek.fm’s biggest supporters onto the show. The CHIEF Ken Tripp beamed on as Sound Engineer (editor) and we forged our very own TOS "triumvirate". I can’t thank them enough for what they have brought to the show and personally to my life as my good and dear friends. On August 22, 2016 Mr. AtoZ and I had the pleasure to record our final episode together as hosts of Standard Orbit. Thank you everyone from the bottom of our hearts for making our journey here at Trek.fm so amazing. Thank you Christopher Jones for giving us the opportunity to share our Star Trek viewpoints with the fans and listeners. We have handed the command codes over to The Chief and Zach Moore, and I have every confidence that they will continue the mission with great zeal and honor. Star Trek Beyond. This episode of Standard Orbit marks the beginning of Phase III, the NCC-1701-A, call it what you will but either way Ken and Zach are excited to take the conn and discuss the latest and greatest installment in the Kelvin Timeline...Star Trek Beyond! With 2016 marking the Star Trek franchise's golden anniversary, there was much anticipation for the third film in the newly christened Kelvin Timeline. Following the divisive reaction to Star Trek Into Darkness and the troubled production history leading up to its follow-up, Star Trek Beyond had a lot to overcome. We are happy to report, it succeeded with flying colors! Now three years into their five year mission, where to we find our beloved crew? How did Justin Lin handle taking over the director's chair from J.J. Abrams? Has the villain-of-the-week code finally been cracked with Idris Elba's Krall? How did the passing of Leonard Nimoy influence the film? And where do we want to see the film series go next? Join us for our discussion of these questions...and BEYOND! Star Trek Las Vegas. In this episode of Standard Orbit, it's an away mission to the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas as Refit Crew takes a break from the convention floor to discuss their thoughts on Star Trek Las Vegas...from a TOS perspective of course! It's not everyday one gets the opportunity to see all the surviving members of the TOS main cast live and in person, but we had the pleasure of exactly that at STLV50! In this round table we discuss Shatner being as lively as ever in his 80s, Koenig's recent thoughts on the decades old grudge between the "little four" and the captain, Takei's take on Sulu's sexuality in Star Trek Beyond, and finally the ever-elegant Nichelle Nichols. We wrap up with our favorite overall moments of STLV and areas where there might be room for improvement in future conventions. Hosts Ken Tripp, Norman C. Norm's Reflections on The Kelvin Era Movies. Over the last several shows on Standard Orbit - specifically episodes 133 and 134, the Commodore (Norman C. Lao) did not have the opportunity to participate in all of the thought provoking and exciting conversations as The Chief (Ken Tripp), Mr. AtoZ (Jeffrey Harlan) and new Standard Orbit crewmember Zach Moore delved deeply into the Kelvin Era cinematic universe. On the cusp of the epically anticipated Star Trek BEYOND, Norm really wanted to participate in his own way. So he decided to pull rank here and record his own thoughts on this new movie universe. Admittedly he was ashamed of his attitude towards Star Trek 2009 and in this Supplemental Commodore's Log entry, he confesses how his fandom almost stalled as his love of the Original Series blinded him to the very tenant that Star Trek was built upon: IDIC...Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. Challenged by that very ideal and axiom of TOS, Norm makes that very same plea to the Star Trek fandom at large and hopes that we all as the fanbase strive to understand the current state of Star Trek and move forward in a collective and positive manner. Note: This recording was made PRIOR to the weekend before Star Trek BEYOND. Host Norman C. Star Trek INTO DARKNESS. In this episode of Standard Orbit, your Refit Crew continues their voyage through the Original Series “Kelvin Era” Movies with Star Trek INTO DARKNESS; the much anticipated sequel to Star Trek 2009. For the past few months, the Refit Crew has been discussing at length, the Original Series Era movies while navigating towards their final destination of BEYOND at temporal coordinates 07.22.16. After nearly 4 years of the critical and financial success of the 2009 Reboot, INTO DARKNESS roared back onto the big screen. Even though it was the highest ever grossing Star Trek movie, earning over $467 million dollars worldwide, many “Trekkies” believed that this movie was the furthest from Gene Roddenberry’s original vision. The themes of this movie were of a darker tone, challenging not only veteran Trekkies, but a modern audience as well as INTO DARKNESS presented a future that was quite different from The Original Series source material. INTO DARKNESS definitely ushered in a new era of Star Trek cinematic storytelling. And then there was the "wrath" of Khan...or was it the "wrath" of the fans? After nearly 7 years of being absent from the big screen post Nemesis, and 4 years since Enterprise and Star Trek in general left television in May of 2005…one monumental question hovered over the hearts and minds of Trekkies around the world: What is the future for Star Trek? When there were rumors of a possible return to the big screen, an even more daunting question spread throughout Trek fandom: How do you revive a franchise that is over 40 years old? Please join us as we take a look back to 2009 and the movie that rekindled Star Trek for (pardon the pun) the Next Generation. Star Trek VI: The Re-Discovered Klingons. In this episode of Standard Orbit, your Refit Crew continues their voyage through the Original Series Cast Movies with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country; heading towards July 22 and BEYOND! In the fall of 1991, as the 25th anniversary was unfolding, many fans were hopeful that they would see the Original Series cast go out with grace and dignity. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was constantly under enormous development pressure as fans anticipated a much stronger showing for what was being rumored as the “swan song” for the Original Series Cast. With Nicholas Meyer returning as director, coupled with the scripting collaboration of friend Denny Martin Flynn, Meyer set his team to task working off of an original idea from Leonard Nimoy; the “fall of the Berlin Wall in Space.” Re-interpreting social issues through the lens of science fiction has always been at the heart of successful Star Trek storytelling and Star Trek VI continues that tradition with incredibly heartfelt performances from the cast who, at the end, literally "signed off" their final appearances in their last feature film together as the Original Series crew. No One Sets Out To Make A Bad Movie. In this episode of Standard Orbit, your Refit Crew continues their voyage through the Original Series Cast Movies with Star Trek V: The Final Frontier; heading towards July 22 and BEYOND! After the enormous box office success of The Voyage Home, the studio decided to continue the cinematic universe with a fifth production: The Final Frontier. William Shatner, who had a contract that ensured he and Nimoy got equal footing, was given the reins to direct. The Final Frontier was a very challenged production and the Chief and Mr. AtoZ try to unpack the issues that plagued ST:V. Was the plot an all too familiar and common trope in Star Trek? Did Shatner elevate the screen presence of the “Big Three” - Kirk, Spock and McCoy - at the expense of the rest of his crew and acting comrades? Did Laurence Luckinbill’s portrayal of an emotionally charged Vulcan fly in the face of what we knew of Vulcan canon from TOS Join us as we warp ahead into the finer points of The Final Frontier. We also reflect on the untimely and tragic passing of Anton Yelchin; a brilliant, young actor who will forever be loved by Star Trek fans as the Kelvin Era's Ensign Pavel Chekov. Voyaging Home. In this episode of Standard Orbit, your Refit Crew continues their voyages through the Original Series Cast Movies with Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, as they head towards July 22 and BEYOND! After the dramatic gravitas of The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock, there is a very obvious and light-hearted approach towards this movie as Leonard Nimoy wanted to take this in another direction. It wound up being the most successful of the Original Series cast movies at the time in 1986. And it was no secret that the return of Nicholas Meyer had a profoundly positive impact as well. One of the strongest aspects to The Voyage Home was the story itself as the writing contributions of Harve Bennett and Nicolas Myer added to the overall partnership with Nimoy at the helm. Most of the cast got their "moment" in the movie and we discuss several of our favorite. We also discuss several Star Trek firsts in this film: we saw the first female Starfleet Captain, Christine Chapel in the background in charge of Starfleet Medical and, in our opinion, a story where the team is actually trying to make an impact to the timeline instead of restoring a timeline. We hope you enjoy our show! Hosts Ken Tripp and Jeffrey Harlan Feature Welcome to Standard Orbit! Searching for Spock. Star Trek BEYOND is nearly upon us and your refit crew felt that a “logical” follow-up to Temporal Trailer Park 1 & 2 would be to a return to the Original Series movie franchise starting with Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Why Star Trek III? Well after the Chief's and the Commodore's conversation on Standard Orbit 123: TMP vs. TWOK: The Conversational Kobayashi Maru, the team felt that The Search for Spock would be the “logical” choice to continue covering the Original Series movie universe and to tap into all of the listeners’ nostalgia and emotional connection to those legendary stories. The Refit Crew reminisces a great deal about how this film was Leonard Nimoy's directorial debut, how Harve Bennett wrote the entire script, discuss major themes of death and darkness in this movie starting with Valkris, through to David Marcus and culminating with the destruction of the Enterprise. Was it the right amount of drama or too much? Ultimately, this movie posited the ultimate question: Is Spock back? A Wagon of Trailers to the Stars. Movie trailers…they tease, they excite, and if crafted properly, have the ability to stir our imaginations into a frenzy of anticipation for…the next trailer! But seriously, movie trailers are a time honored tradition amongst film fans and in this case Star Trek fans. They have the power to inspire, to create wonder, and to fuel the imagination for the eventual theatrical release of the next installment in the Star Trek film franchise. For this show, we are going to actually step into Mr. AtoZ' Atavachron and set the temporal parameters between 1979 and 1989 as we travel back time and in memory. As we begin to ramp up to Star Trek BEYOND, we are going to take a look at a select group of Star Trek movie trailers from the first 10 years; starting with The Motion Picture and through to Star Trek V. The Misconception of Perception. As the old saying goes, Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder. The Original Series episode “Is There In Truth No Beauty?” from Season Three, is an incredibly deep and philosophical exploration into the more complex meanings behind the nature of one’s self. Does the superficial outweigh the essential? How can the truth survive amongst the shifting nature of human perception? As the Chief and AtoZ were away on respective missions, I beamed aboard my sisters from Educating Geeks, Alice and Megan, to help me unpack these philosophies. At the end of this episode Spock and Miranda shared a wonderful exchange, “The glory of creation is in its infinite diversity. And the way our differences combine to create meaning and beauty." Did they tell a story that lead to the message or does the path not match with the destination? Does this episode fall into the Season Three stigma or did it set itself apart with this unique study of the human condition? The A to Z of Trekipedia.com.
There is a truism when it comes to fandom: The Devil is in the
Details ... or at many times, the lack or inconsistency thereof.
Canon, in and of itself, is a very delicate proposition. It can
change as easily as the creative and production teams change
between projects, impacting the way that canonical information is
distributed and applied to the overall fandom. We rely on these
details so that we can faithfully extend our fandom and immersion.
Yet, there are far too many instances where important and granular
level details fall through some severely large and unstable
singularities.
There is also another truism regarding fandom: If you want
something done right, do it yourself. Jeffrey Harlan, Mr. Atoz of
Trek.fm’s Standard Orbit, followed that very axiom and created
Trekipedia.com; an encyclopedic online reference born out of a need
to consolidate Star Trek facts, figures, lore and nomenclature. As
a Star Trek fan-fiction writer and enthusiast, Jeffrey needed a
very specific and dependable resource and database. Please join us
as we discover how Trekipedia.com came to be - out of need at
first, and later as both a public online resource and as a personal
labor of love.

Feedback from the Fans and The Babel
Conference.
When the Standard Orbit “Refit” Crew began our shakedown voyage
aboard the Trek.fm network on January 11, 2016, one of the tenants
of our podcasting team for Trek.fm was to ensure that we - Norman
C. Lao, Jeffrey Harlan and Ken Tripp - upheld the level of quality
and content standards that the listeners of Standard Orbit and
Trek.fm have come to expect from the incredible groundwork set by
former hosts Drew Stewart and Mike Schindler. Theirs were large
shoes to fill and the Refit Team had a daunting task to reach a bar
that had been previously set so high with 110 shows.
Nearly four months and 14 episodes later, the Refit Team just
wanted to check in with all of our supporters and listeners to see
if we have settled into a nice and steady cruising speed. The Chief
(Ken), Mr. AtoZ (Jeffrey) and I have a great deal of fantastic
content planned for the future. But, we also want to keep all of
our listeners and Red Shirts engaged in the show that is crafted
for you. We have loved every second that we have brought you in
these first few months and there is a great road ahead to BEYOND
and STLV50! Thanks to everyone for supporting all of our efforts on

The Motion Picture vs. The Wrath of Khan.
When Star Trek left the television airwaves in 1969, there was a
void that was left in the hearts and minds of Trekkies around the
world. The Original Series "re-runs" and the 1973 Animated Series
tried to fill that void with varying degrees of success. But on May
25th, 1977, everything changed with the release of George Lucas’
STAR WARS. It created a shockwave in the film industry that
challenged the very nature of science fiction storytelling and the
projects that were being developed at that time, especially Star
Trek: Phase II - the grandiose production to bring Star Trek back
to television.
Many Trekkies believe that Phase II's evolution into Star Trek:
The Motion Picture was necessary to strike while the proverbial
"iron" was hot, and launch the film franchise through riding the
epic financial tidal wave and wake of Star Wars. Conversely, there
are also many who believe that the (arguably) most popular Star
Trek movie of all time is The Wrath of Khan because it was more
"profitable" as a film and because it has so totally permeated
global pop culture to this very day. So ... what IS the movie that
truly “saved” Star Trek and is this the "conversational" Kobayashi
Maru for the Chief and the Commodore?

The Essential Top TOS.
In this episode of Standard Orbit, we conclude our epic journey
with what we believe to be the Top 15 TOS episodes for
essential viewing. Over the course of Standard Orbit episodes 119,
120, and 121, we were able to academically and passionately
deliberate and discover what we believe are the top five episodes
for each individual season. And thank you to the members of The
Babel Conference who voted to help create what can be considered as
one of the most comprehensive "essential viewing" lists for any fan
of The Original Series.
Our goal for this episode, and for all of the TOS "Essentials"
podcasts, is to offer new perspectives to both new and veteran fans
of The Original Series. Hopefully, our recommendations will be used
as a TOS starter kit with episodes chosen from each season and not
heavily influenced by any one in particular. We believe our
listeners will truly enjoy these comprehensive recommendations
compiled by their very own Refit Crew; podcasters and friends they
have come to know and trust.

Essential Season Three TOS.
In this episode of Standard Orbit, we continue our coverage from
Episode 120; delving deeply into Season Three with a more finely
tuned eye and critical perspective. When it comes to ranking the
"best" episodes of The Original Series, there are Top Ten lists ...
and there are TOP TEN lists. Unlike Season One, episodes from
Season Three are rarely, if ever represented. Believing that these
Top Ten lists are imbalanced in many ways, your Refit Team has
revisited all three seasons of TOS to discover what we believe are
true "essential viewing" recommendations.
Our goal for this episode, and for all of the TOS "Essentials"
podcasts, is to offer new perspectives to both new and veteran fans

Essential Season Two TOS.
When it comes to ranking the "best" episodes of The Original
Series, there are Top Ten lists ... and there are TOP TEN lists.
Unlike Season One, episodes from Seasons Two and Three are rarely
represented. Believing these Top Ten lists are imbalanced in many
ways, your Refit Team has revisited all three seasons of TOS to
discover what we believe are true "essential viewing"
recommendations. In this episode of Standard Orbit, we continue our
coverage from Episode 119; delving deeply into Season Two with a
more finely tuned eye and critical perspective.
Our goal for this episode, and for all of the TOS "Essentials"
podcasts, is to offer a new and perhaps in many ways - different
"best of" list for each season so that newcomers to The Original
Series can use our recommendations as an essentials starter kit;
episodes chosen from each season and not heavily influenced by any
one in particular. We believe our listeners will truly enjoy these
comprehensive recommendations compiled by their very own Refit
Crew; podcasters and friends they have come to know and trust here
on Standard Orbit.

Essential Season One TOS.
There are Top Ten lists ... and there are TOP TEN lists. This
episode of Standard Orbit is about the latter. Many online lists,
from prominent geek culture websites, favor Season One heavily and
with good reason. Rarely if ever, are Seasons Two and Three as
equally represented. These lists also cite City on the Edge of
Forever as being the quintessential TOS episode of all time - if
not for all of Star Trek. Feeling that these lists were imbalanced
and incomplete, we wanted to look at each season of TOS for what we
would recommend as "essential viewing."
Our goal for this episode, and for the upcoming TOS Essentials
podcasts, is to offer a new and perhaps in many ways - different
"best of" list for each season so that newcomers to The Original
Series can use our recommendations as an essentials starter kit;
episodes chosen from each season and not heavily influenced by any

The Commodores of The Original Series.
Several episodes in The Original Series introduced a few
high-ranking and "intrusive" characters that shared one
commonality: the rank of Commodore. From the Ahab-esque Matt Decker
in The Doomsday Machine, to Robert Wesley who was in charge of
the M-5 Multitronic System proceedings in The Ultimate
Computer, to Commodore Stone who moderated the legal proceedings in
Court Martial and several more; the Commodores were an
authoritative, bureaucratic and at times overbearing extension
of Starfleet Command.
The Commodores added an additional layer of dramatic effect in
The Original Series as they were usually at odds with Captain Kirk,
Mr, Spock and the ongoing Five Year Mission of the U.S.S.
Enterprise. They were akin to the overbearing and
controlling "authority figure" that Kirk, Spock and others had
to struggle against and overcome; a dynamic to which many younger
viewers in the late 1960's related. In the end, the Commodore rank
never extended past The Original Series save a few minor references
in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The Enterprise Incident Commentary.
As a follow-up to Standard Orbit 116: The Real Enemy Is War
Itself, The "Refit" Crew wanted to take a look at the only other
episode in the entirety of the 79 of The Original Series that
featured the Romulans. We also wanted to do something a little
unorthodox for this podcast. We are doing a "live commentary" of
The Enterprise Incident–a very polished and exciting episode from
Season Three and what we felt was the perfect compliment and a
fantastic continuation of the Romulans and their alluring mystique
that began with Season One's Balance of Terror.
Please note that we will be commenting specifically on the HD
remastered version and several of our comments address the amazing
quality of the visual effects and overall production of The
Enterprise Incident. If you are listening to this show in your car,
or commuting to work or school, this probably won't make that much
sense to you, unless of course you have this particular episode
committed to memory. We hope you take the time and opportunity to
sync up your rewatch of The Enterprise Incident with our commentary
to accompany you. Enjoy!

How The Enemy Below Influenced Balance of
Terror.
The Enemy Below tells the story of the epic "cat and mouse" game
between an American Destroyer Escort Captain and the commander of a
German U-boat. This 1957 World War Two classic
film directly influenced Star Trek writer Paul Schneider as he
crafted the narrative for what would become one of Star Trek's
greatest episodes. Balance of Terror was a ground-breaking episode
for Star Trek, as it brought a "military" essence to Starfleet and
allowed the audience to grasp the political tapestry of The United
Federation of Planets in the 23rd Century.
Balance of Terror is a fan favorite for many reasons: the
introduction of the Romulans, the humanizing of the enemy, and the
application of sound naval tactics to help drive the narrative
tensions. It was also famous for its bold decision to break yet
another convention of the time: Women serving in combat. Almost 30
years later after this episode was produced, women were finally
allowed to serve on warships. In addition, the military does not
normally allow married couples on the same vessel for fear of that
couple being killed outright in combat as almost seen with Robert
Tomlinson and Angela Martine.

The Alternative Factors.
Alternate realties, alternate universes, and alternate timelines
essentially share the same family tree if you will. The point where
the tree trunk meets the ground is the Big Bang; the focal point
for every conceivable timeline. As the tree grows, limbs sprout off
in every direction, branches sprout from those limbs, twigs sprout
from those branches and so on and so forth. Most of the realities
that we have seen on Star Trek are universally similar; the laws of
physics, historical figures and events, significant locations and
most importantly, the main cast of characters.
On May 8th 2009, the eleventh Star Trek feature film
boldly went where no Trek had gone before: rebooting and
reimagining the franchise under the aegis of J.J. Abrams and Bad
Robot Productions. The film paid homage to the previous Star
Trek continuity via a time-travel plot that ultimately created
a new timeline; now only loosely connected to the prime
universe. Whether it is called NuTrek or the JJ-verse, the
Star Trek film continuity from 2009 is its own timeline. But the
question remains: At what point did the timeline diverge from the
original?

Dissecting Spock's Brain.
On this episode of Standard Orbit, we prep for surgery and
perform a deep dissection and examination of what Star Trek fans
have labeled as the "worst" episode ever in the history of The
Original Series, and was even parodied as a stage
production in 2004 for a limited run in Irvine, California at the
Irvine Improv! William Shatner, in his autobiography Up Till
Now, and in his memoirs Star Trek: Memories, called this one of the
series' worst episodes; a "tribute" to NBC executives who slashed
the show's budget and placed it in a bad time slot.
There was a great deal of unrest happening behind the scenes at
the beginning of Star Trek's third season. Gene Coon was trying to
complete his writing contract and director Marc Daniels felt
marginalized by executive producer Fred Freiberger. The show budget
was always under pressure which in turn forced co-producer Robert
Justman and Fred Freiberger to constantly redirect creative to fit
production, increasing tensions between them and the NBC front
offices. Did these underlying forces ultimately affect the return
The Original Series on September 20th, 1968?

Star Trek Beyond the Trailer.
The first trailer for Star Trek Beyond was released
on December 14, 2015 and was immediately and severely
criticized by the Star Trek fan community at large. Focusing too
much on action, such as James T. Kirk performing some thrilling
heroics on a motorcycle, the overwhelming fan response raised a
very interesting question: Did the combination of Justin Lin,
Director of The Fast and the Furious, in concert with the explosive
styling of this trailer, cause an unjust reaction from the fans
based solely on some ninety seconds of footage?
On this episode of Standard Orbit, we will take and in-depth
look at the speculation surrounding the trailer, delve deeper into
why the fans reacted in such a volatile manner and go even further
… beyond the trailer itself. Two days after the trailer's
release, Simon Pegg told audiences, “There’s a lot more story, and
a lot more character stuff, and a lot more of what I would call
‘Star Trek stuff.’ But, you know, they’ve got to bring a big
audience in, they’ve got to bang the drum. So to Star Trek fans,
I’d say hang in there, be patient."

What's Past Is Prologue.
Nostalgia is perhaps one of the most powerful forces that
influences our lives. The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary’s
second definition of Nostalgia describes it as being “a wistful or
excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past
period or irrecoverable condition; also: something that evokes
Nostalgia.” In today’s world of recycled Hollywood content,
reboots, refreshes and retellings - has the entertainment industry
created a rift in Star Trek fandom, to the point where preserving
the "glory days" is the only way for some fans to move forward?
In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Norman C. Lao and
Jeffrey Harlan are joined by Portal 47’s Larry Nemecek and Mission
Log’s John Champion. They take a deep and concerned look at the
power of Nostalgia and its undeniable influence over fandom's
appreciation for Star Trek; specifically The Original Series, and
share their observations towards Nostalgia as it continues to
influence the interpretation of perhaps the greatest of Star Trek's
tenants: IDIC - Infinite Diversity through Infinite
Combinations.
